2000 - 2002
USA TV, Film Colony, and Ovitz TV company ATG asked Kwyn to pitch an idea for a “hip-hopera” adapting Mozart’s Don Giovanni for an urban audience.
They hired him while he was still on the phone. Writing his darkest piece in theme and content, he called on his immersive viewings of gangster epics like Scarface and The Godfather to create “The Rise and Fall of Don G.”, which traces the rise of a girl-crazy rapper who rises to the top through murder and hype only to be brought down by his own excesses, fears, and betrayals.
...Don G., only weeks after murdering a criminal hip-hop mogul (Commander), shows his duplicity as he gives an interview to an MTV VJ.
INT. MTV STUDIO. DAY
Ananda Lewis interviews Don G.
ANANDA:
You have the number one song and video in the country on your first release. How does that feel?
GIOVANNI:
Bittersweet like sweet and sour chicken, Ananda. It's great to know the fans like something Don G. has done. But I wish I'd never had to write and record this song.
ANANDA:
Because of Commander's death.
GIOVANNI:
Me and Commander were mad close. I had to do this for him, to let him know he's still with me, no matter what's goin' down.
ANANDA:
And you're giving half the profits from the record to charity.
GIOVANNI:
And to Commander's kids.
ANANDA:
So dope. It's too bad there aren't more artists like you.
GIOVANNI:
Not a lot of young rappers out there got concern for a moral conscientiousness. But I just think it's important to have that, know what I'm sayin'?
ANANDA:
You're cute too.
GIOVANNI:
Ananda, watch out girl, cause I'm a brother will take you home and do things to you you can't understand yet.
ANANDA:
One last question?
GIOVANNI:
Shoot.
ANANDA:
Why do you always wear white?
GIOVANNI:
It makes me feel like an angel.
